Advisories ::

Port of Rotterdam battles delays, congestion

Source: BDP Europe and Industry Trade Allies

Critical labor shortages in combination with a surge in container volumes driven by record imports and exports from China have created a general slowdown in activities at
the port of Rotterdam.

Based on input from our carrier partners and others, BDP anticipates a significant impact in the following areas:

Services
Many of our carrier partners are extending their port stays to accommodate all export and import cargo.

  • Maxi service: Exports containers are being loaded in Antwerp.

  • Asia/Europe 3: Service through Suez is being delayed 24 hours,
    but without impacting total transit time.
  • Asia/Europe 7: Space availability and guaranteeing cargo moves through Rotterdam could be adversely affected.
  • Russia feeder: Carriers will bypass Rotterdam to Bremerhaven for cargo handling.

Equipment
Because it will be difficult to move additional empty containers into Rotterdam, carriers are pursuing supplies in Bremerhaven and other locations.

Intermodal
All carriers are experiencing barge and train delays, and truck capacity is maxed out. Carriers continue to seek alternatives modes of transport and to have barge traffic expedited.

The Rotterdam situation poses a challenge to shippers, carriers and logistics firms alike. We at BDP are committed to helping you through this difficult period with minimal disruption to your business.
