US Trade Representative confirms 25% tariff hike for Friday

May 8, 2019 - A document filed in the Federal Register Wednesday morning confirms tariffs on $200 billion worth of imports from China will rise from 10% to 25% on Friday, May 10 at 12:01 a.m. ET. "In the most recent negotiations, China has chosen to retreat from specific commitments agreed to in earlier rounds. In light of the lack of progress in discussions with China, the President has directed the Trade Representative to increase the rate of additional duty to 25 percent," the document said.

Pompeo warns of new geopolitical contest in the Arctic

May 5, 2019 - On Monday, one day ahead of an Arctic Council meeting in Finland, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned of Russian and Chinese ambitions in the high north, and he suggested that America's Arctic policy should be framed in terms of competition for power and resources.

China April exports unexpectedly fell as imports rose

May 7, 2019 - China’s exports fell in April and imports rose, before the abrupt turn in the trade talks that has led to a re-escalation of the dispute with the U.S. Exports dropped 2.7 percent in April, while imports expanded by 4 percent last month, leaving a trade surplus of $13.84 billion, the customs administration said Wednesday. Economists forecast that exports would tick up by 3 percent while imports would slip by 2.1 percent.

'We need to sail greener, not slower, to cut vessel emissions'

May 3, 2019 - Policy director of the UK Chamber of Shipping Anna Ziou has slammed French proposals to impose speed limits as a way to cut shipping emissions. She claims it would give a “false impression” of the industry taking action.

Russian Railways boosts rail freight services in China, Finland, and Turkey

May 5, 2019 - Russian Railways is maintaining its international growth momentum with plans to bolster rail freight operations in China, Finland and Turkey. Along with the heads of Azerbaijan and Turkey’s state railways, Russian Railways chairman Oleg Belozyorov signed an MoU to “assure” regular traffic on a Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route.

CIMAC: Cross-sector action needed on greenhouse gases

May 6, 2019 - The IMO decision to target a 50 percent cut in shipping's greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 was an important milestone, and it was largely welcomed by the global engine builders’ community. Although some parties found that the IMO target could have been even more ambitious, it clearly marked a paradigm shift: improvements in existing technologies will not be enough. Only through cross-sector cooperation and an increased focus on R&D in carbon-neutral technologies (such as batteries, fuel cells, or synthetic fuels) will shipping stand a chance of reaching the IMO 2050 target.

Adani gets nod to develop new container terminal in Yangon

May 6, 2019 - Adani Yangon International Terminal has received an approval from Myanmar to develop a new container terminal in Ahlon, Yangon. The company was granted the green light on April 26 to develop, operate and maintain the Ahlon International Port Terminal (2) under a 50-year build, operate and transfer deal with the government, according to Myanmar’s Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA).
