Degradable Plastic to Saudi Arabia

November 29, 2018: Beginning February 1st, 2019, the second phase of the regulation for degradable plastic products will come into effect in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The regulation applies to all the disposable products manufactured from polypropylene and polyethylene plastics which are often used for a short time. A list of the products subject to the regulation can be found here

This regulation makes it obligatory that the products are OXO degradable rather than biodegradable.

Plastic products used in medical and food industries do not fall under this regulation.

Imported products will be checked by customs and will have to comply with the regulations. Customs offices of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will have a list of the SASO registered suppliers/factories where importers deal with. No shipment will be customs cleared if the suppliers/factories of the plastic products are not on this list.

The plastic products entering the Kingdom will have to mention the official OXO logo that only registered suppliers/factories are allowed to use.

The shrink wrap shown in the image above will no longer be permitted.

Importers using stretch films for (secondary) packaging, HS code 392119000000, will now be affected by the regulation as this plastic product falls under this second phase.
