Magnitude-7.0 earthquake jolts Turkey

October 30, 2020 - A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Aegean Sea on Friday afternoon, jolting western Turkey and destroying buildings in coastal cities there.

People in and around the Turkish city of Izmir have gathered in the streets after fleeing their buildings to seek safety. At least 20 buildings were destroyed in Izmir, the city's mayor told CNN Turk.

Images showed a car crushed under a building that had collapsed, while TV footage showed people digging through the rubble, apparently in search of survivors.

Buildings were also destroyed in Bornova and Bayrakli following the tremor, the Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said on Twitter.
