Earlier this week, the United States and EU allies announced additional penalties targeted at Russia which included new export control restrictions to impose severe costs on the Russian economy. With these announcements come significant changes in US and international law imposing a wide spectrum of sanctions and restrictions in response to Russia’s conduct in Ukraine.

Major developments from air and ocean carriers
Air Freight
- Major airlines have halted flights in and out of Russia and Ukraine
- Air space restrictions over Russia and Ukraine require re-routings equating to extra time and extra fuel
- Rising fuel prices as price per barrel continues to climb (impacts jet fuel prices as airlines raise FSC surcharge)
- Airlines have begun implementing a "war risk surcharge"
- Increased amount of cargo to neighboring countries such as Poland, Baltic states, and Finland as a result of Russia cancelations
Ocean Freight
- Ukraine's military has suspended commercial shipping at its ports
- All major carriers have temporarily suspended shipments to/from Odessa, Ukraine, and ports in Russia (announcements made by ONE, Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, and Yang Ming)
- Exceptions include essential goods such as medical equipment and humanitarian supplies
- Crude oil has soared to some of the highest levels since 2014
- Carriers have also announced temporary suspension of cargo to/from Belarus
